Driver Hire Motherwell, is now a North Lanarkshire Charter accredited employer. The aim of the Charter, which is a local council initiative, is to help build a better workforce for the future and a thriving local economy.
Key pillars of the Charter are: fair pay, engagement with schools, the promotion of volunteering, supporting local suppliers, staff development, wellbeing, inclusion and a commitment to equality and diversity.
Driver Hire Motherwell supplies staff – both temporary and permanent – to the road transport industry. It’s owned by Wilson Gibb Management Services Ltd (WGMS). WGMS operates Driver Hire offices in Edinburgh, Fife, Grangemouth, Motherwell, the Borders and Newcastle. It’s enjoyed a partnership with Driver Hire extending well over 30 years.
Accreditation is only achieved after a strict vetting process, as Rachael McWilliams, WGMS Operations & Development Director explains. “Charter assessors looked at how we run and operate our franchise and how we treat our employees. They also looked at how we contribute to the local economy by using local suppliers for a variety of office services. They checked we have regular audits, offer career development training and have an employee assistance programme to help with mental health and staff well-being.”
The end result was a Bronze Charter Accreditation. “Our aim, over the next year, is to achieve a Silver Accreditation,” Rachael continues. “That will mean more community volunteering and attending careers fairs at schools and colleges to encourage a younger generation into recruitment or road transport.”
Representatives from North Lanarkshire Charter recently visited Driver Hire’s Motherwell office to present the team with plaques and invitations to upcoming member events.
