Winter windscreen warning

With winter weather firmly in charge, time for a reminder of the importance of ensuring that icy windows on your vehicle are completely cleared before starting your day’s work. Failure to do so could land you a £500 fine. One was recently handed to a van driver in Scotland after he was spotted by police peering out of a small porthole in his otherwise iced up windscreen.

Of course, avoiding a fine whilst ensuring your own safety and that of other road users is very easy. All you need is a proper windscreen scraper and a bit of elbow grease to get the vision you need on a cold and frosty morning. Whilst chucking a bowl of hot water might be quicker, such a rapid increase in temperature results in the expansion of small chips which, long term, can become much more damaging cracks.

Turning the car engine on and leaving it idling until the vehicle is both warn and fully defrosted is, let’s face it, an environmental no-no. And please don’t improvise with a credit card. No matter how hot your recent spending, it won’t do as good a job as a scraper – and it can scratch your windscreen.

For the professional driver, all this will no doubt, be part of the daily walk round check. But we felt, worth a reminder.
