Bill aims to reduce truck crime

According to a recent survey conducted by fleet management experts, Samara, professional drivers say that thefts of fuel and goods from trucks are on the rise. The survey results are backed up by official figures from the National vehicle Crime Intelligence Police Service, which shows that goods worth an estimated £110m were stolen from trucks between 2023 and 2024 – that’s a 63% increase.

In response, the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Freight and Logistics is tabling a bill in Parliament
that could help tackle the issue.

The proposed legislation would give law enforcement agencies new powers to investigate and disrupt freight related crime networks. Commenting on truck crime, MP Rachel Taylor said: “Criminals increasingly regard it as a low risk, high reward crime.”

Meanwhile, you can help reduce truck crime by adopting the following suggestions:

• Always lock your trailer and cab whenever you leave your vehicle unattended.
• Avoid parking in isolated laybys overnight.
• try to park in a way that blocks access to rear doors.
• When returning to your vehicle always check for signs of tampering or interference.
• If you see a thief around your vehicle, lock the doors, start the engine, turn on the lights and sound the horn.
• Don’t discuss details of your route with other drivers or customers.
• Stow important documents such as shipping documents and consignment notes in a safe place.
• Always be vigilant
