Delivering a better way to work

The image of the UK’s van driver is changing. That’s what the second Mercedes-Benz ‘Under the bonnet’ report has revealed. It shows that half of today’s van drivers made the move after being furloughed during the pandemic, were made redundant, or because they were actively seeking a more flexible way to work.

For 72% it was a deliberate and positive move, part of a broader plan to reassess their lifestyle to achieve a better work-life balance. 52% of van drivers said that flexibility is the biggest factor keeping them in the profession enabling them to be more involved in family life and personal routines, resulting in better mental wellbeing.

Interestingly, 35% of business owners see their drivers as valuable brand representatives. With that in mind, looking after their wellbeing is important. Employers said that engaged drivers are more productive, more reliable and more likely to deliver the kind of customer experience that delivers brand loyalty.

And to keep drivers even happier behind the wheel, in conjunction with Mercedes-Benz, Radio 1 Breakfast DJ, Scott Mills has launched a podcast specifically aimed at van drivers. In the words of Iain Forsyth, Mercedes-Benz Vans UK Managing Director, “we’re shining a full beam on the reality of van life.” And here’s an interesting thing – 84% of van drivers say they can sense the mood of the nation by what happens out on the road.

On the flipside, data from a report by Peugeot suggests that van drivers have to put up with being sworn at and regularly tailgated by other motorists. Those surveyed feel that this comes down to stereotypical, negative views of the quality of driving by van drivers. And yet, 67% say they make a point of being mindful of other road-users. For sure, professional van drivers play a vital role in all our lives. If there’s a focus on driving standards, along with a greater appreciation of the importance of the work they do from the general public, that has to be a good thing.
