Zero emission truck sales on the up

If you’re worried about climate change, then we’ve got good news. In 2023, registrations of zero emission trucks leapt by 265%. The not so good news is that figure represents only 234 units – just 0.5% of the total market.

The road transport industry is well aware of the need to reduce emissions, so why is the figure so low? According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT), what’s preventing operators making the switch is concern that zero emission vehicles are commercially viable. Hardly surprising in a business climate with wafer thin margins.

And, whilst the benefits of zero emission vehicles are clear – a reduced carbon footprint and the potential for more efficient operations – operators point to a lack of suitable charge points as another reason for being reluctant to make the change.

Commenting on this, Mike Hawes from the SMMT said: “Increased availability of electric and hydrogen powered models is helping increase demand. But understandably, operators need cast iron confidence on charge point infrastructure before deciding to switch.”

Overall demand for new HGVs grew for the second year on the trot. There were 46,227 new trucks of all types, up 13.5% on 2023 – the best year for new registrations since 2019.
