Kirsten Latimer is having the time of her life. After passing her category C HGV driving test earlier this year, she’s fulfilling her long time dream – making her living driving a lorry. It’s certainly quite a career change for Kirsten. She’s spent the last 30 years working in the pharmaceutical industry most recently running clinical trials. During that time, Kirsten also brought up a family. But with the children having flown the nest, she was looking for a change.

“I’ve always loved driving big vehicles,” says Kirsten, who’s one of the team of temps at Driver Hire Dundee. “But because you never saw any lady truck drivers I didn’t think it was possible. Then, one day, a young lassie delivered some goods to my house. We had a chat and that got me thinking that there was a very real opportunity to drive for a living.”

Kirsten self-financed a course with a local HGV driving school, passed her test and she’s now out on the road, fulfilling her dream.

“Driving is a perfect job for me,” she continues. “In the cab you’re your own boss. But, doing multi-drop work you’re constantly meeting and interacting with a real mix of people.

“I’ve been mostly working for local builders’ merchants so the job can be quite physical at times – particularly with curtain-siders. But I quite like that. Working for Driver Hire is giving me the opportunity to try different types of driving jobs to find out what I like and don’t like. But I just love being in a lorry, building the experience I’ll need to land a permanent job at some time in the future.”
