Tony McCafferty - Inverness

Tony McCafferty - Driver Hire InvernessTony McCafferty moved into recruiting when he purchased our Inverness franchise. At the end of his first full year’s trading – in a challenging business environment – he provided cover for 4,200 shifts and the office was just a shade away from £500,000 turnover.  And 2009/10 trading is away to a flying start.

Not bad for a franchise based in a town with a population of just 60,000, surrounded by acres of heather and hundreds of grazing sheep. That’s why he was nominated as ‘Best Newcomer’ at the Scottish Recruitment Awards 2009.

Tony's background is in retail and for five years he managed the local branch of Matalan. His next step up there would have meant moving away from Inverness, but with his wife and family happily settled there that was something he didn’t want to do. So he started looking for other local opportunities.  And that’s when he came across Driver Hire; the UK’s leading supplier of temporary and permanent staff to road transport, logistics and industry in general.

As with all Driver Hire franchisees, Tony went on an intensive two-week course to learn about recruitment and Driver Hire’s formula for success. He receives back-up and advice from our regional and central support teams. But, as with any successful business person, self-motivation and a will to win is what counts. Tony has those in abundance. He’s also very personable and a great guy to work with.

He brings a refreshing and positive style to recruitment. When we phoned him about this case study, he was returning from a meeting with a packaging company. They were looking for people to work on their box manufacturing production line. ‘Meeting’ may not be the appropriate word here, because Tony spent most of the time working on the production line – making boxes!

“Recruitment isn’t just about skills,” says Tony. “Behaviour and workplace atmosphere comes in to it too. Not everyone is suited to a factory environment. By actually doing the job I can give candidates a better brief.” It certainly paid off. Tony filled the four vacancies – much to the delight of his client.

Tony is a great communicator. He reckons that his success comes down to “selling without realising that I’m selling”. Of course selling is all very well, but success is about delivering on the promise. And that’s what Tony does, day in – day out.
