Nuffield Health is the largest healthcare charity in the UK. It provides access to 15,000 health experts through 31 hospitals, 65 fitness & wellbeing centres, 200 corporate facilities and 39 medical centres, helping people to both get healthy and stay healthy.
To support its hospital service, Nuffield have six Healthcare Support Service Units to which sterile and unsterile equipment is taken to be decontaminated ready for re-use. Transportation is undertaken by a team of 61 drivers. Come September this year all of them must have completed their first 35 hours of Driver CPC training.
Darren Green is Nuffield’s Transport Manager and Health & Safety Coordinator. “Initially we’d been doing group training at the weekend, but due to operational requirements it was proving difficult for drivers to make the sessions.”
Darren, who has a Category C licence, has worked with Driver Hire for more than 20 years both as a driver and, subsequently, as a manager at Nuffield. He recalled a meeting he had with Driver Hire at the Commercial Vehicle Motor Show in 2013. “Representatives from Driver Hire Training told me about the more locally based training they offered. This would be much more convenient for my drivers. So I arranged an initial course at our Wetherby Service Support Unit.”
The first batch of training has gone down well: “Comments from the drivers who attended included: excellent, informative and interesting,” says Darren. “They felt that the instructor clearly knew his stuff and were particularly impressed with the literature handed out after the course. This had not been a feature at other courses they had attended. Overall we were very impressed and have booked further courses at our depots in Cambridge, Leeds, Southampton, Stoke and Tiverton.”
