Debbie is a Class 2 driver, on the books at Driver Hire Dundee. She previously worked in the equine industry. However, when that job came to an end, she decided to add another string to her bow, by going down the HGV licence acquisition route. As things have turned out it was a smart move.

With a shiny new licence, Debbie started looking for work, but initially things didn’t go to plan. So, she put her licence in a drawer and moved on to a variety of non-transport industry work. Spencer Taylor has been fascinated by trucks since he was a young lad. “From the very first time I heard the sound of air brakes,” he recalls.

He’s now 44, on the books at Driver Hire Cambridge and the proud holder of a Category C+E licence. “Spencer came to us as a van driver and paid for his own HGV training,” says his boss, John Rigg. “He’s well-liked and respected by all our customers. Spencer has a positive attitude to all aspects of the job and is very passionate about his job and working for Driver Hire.”

You could say that when Mark Clarke joined Driver Hire his working career became temporarily ‘unstuck’. That’s because he’d previously worked in the industrial adhesive chemical unit for well-known glue manufacturer, Bostick. Nowadays he’s got a different adhesive – it’s called logistics and he’s loving it.

Driver Hire Plymouth took him onto their books as a rookie Class C and very quickly found him work with Allied Bakeries. “It was a bit like being thrown in at the deep end,” he laughs. “But 15 years on I’m Driver Hire Plymouth’s most experienced driver. I work for them full-time and give guidance and advice to other Driver Hire drivers.”      Read more…

Back in March 2020, right before the first national lockdown, Richard Wastie came along to register with Driver Hire Oxford to help out with some non-HGV work that they were recruiting for. Fast-forward eight months and what a mark Richard has made on both Driver Hire and the local community.

Not only has Richard supported three different Driver Hire National Account customers during this time, but he has also been supporting both the NHS Blood and Transplant Service and the South Central Ambulance Service with their own driving needs.

Paul Mutimer, on the books at Driver Hire Norwich, sent a daily photograph to his office from wherever he was working, throughout the height of the lockdown, “just to cheer them up.” Paul has worked for Driver Hire Norwich for a number of years as an HGV Driver and continued to work during lockdown.

Whilst restrained from visiting people in the height of the Coronavirus pandemic, he broke down the communication barriers with his love for pictures and for making people smile.       Read more…

Mohammad Ghaed came to the UK in 2017 as a refugee from Iran, where he was a fully qualified aircraft engineer. The firm that he worked for, however, was unable to send on his certificates, so he basically started his life here from scratch and with no family around to support him.

He found Telford College, who put him through his Class 2, before registering with Driver Hire Birmingham. He is also currently funding his Class 1 so he will hopefully have that string to his bow very soon.         Read more…
