There’s no doubt that truck drivers get a bird’s eye view of the road and road users. A fact that was picked up by someone at Hampshire police recently. They came up with the idea of hiring an unmarked Scania tractor unit and putting an officer inside it to observe motorists on the M27 and the M3 motorways. During the five-day test, 84 vehicles were stopped, 55% of which were commercial vehicles. As a result, 65 people were prosecuted for a mixture of offences including using mobile phones, driving whilst distracted, or not being in full control of their vehicle. Top of the tree (or should that be the bottom) was a motorist spotted having a drink whilst using his laptop, and writing down answers to a radio quiz. Thank God his phone didn’t ring!
