Milton Keynes-based logistics firm arvato has been selected by Sony Music UK to handle its distribution services in the UK and Ireland, musicweek.com reports.

Sony Music, which represents such artists as One Direction and Kasabian, has signed a three-year contract with arvato. The latter will distribute hundreds of thousands of orders to sites around the UK and Ireland.

The deal will see arvato handle both music and merchandise, as well as managing Sony Music's returns service.

arvato's orders will come from Sony's MyPlay Direct artist stores, which it will run from its 16,500-square-metre distribution centre. The contract could see the firm looking at hiring drivers to help with the increased workload.

The two companies had already worked together, with the new contract extending arvato's existing six-year cash service relationship with the label. This, along with arvato's authority as the leading distributor of CDs in the UK, paved the way for Sony's decision to issue it the contract.

Speaking to arvato.com, vice president of operations at Sony Music UK, Stuart Hale-Brown, enthused: "arvato has the necessary expertise and flexibility to adapt to our evolving needs in market undergoing significant change.

"This is especially important when it comes to delivering premium products directly to consumers, who expect a premium service. The dedication from the team has really helped us in the transition of the e-commerce business. We look forward to working with arvato and incorporating its innovative solutions to drive our business forward."
