Following the closure of Truckpol earlier this year, it seems that the future of AVCIS (Association of Chief Police Officers Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service) is now under threat. Falling levels of vehicle crime are being used to support the case. An options paper has been submitted to the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) with a decision due shortly. However, ‘vehicle enabled’ crime may be included within the scope of the National Crime Agency (NCA) which is due to be launched next year.
Commenting on the threat to AVCIS, a spokesperson for its corporate sponsor, Tracker, the vehicle tracking firm said: “Like all police force resources AVCIS are having to look at their structure and staffing, in light of the significant financial cuts that have to be made. To date no formal decision has been made and Tracker will continue to work with AVCIS until we understand otherwise.”
