Lorry week delivers

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), 3,000 tonnes of goods are moved by commercial vehicles in the UK every minute of the day. All of which gives us a very good reason to love the lorry – because it delivers the essentials (and not so essentials) of everyday life. And that’s what National Lorry Week celebrates.
Organised by the Road Haulage Association (RHA), the theme for this year’s event was not just about promoting the often overlooked importance of the lorry. It was also about promoting road transport and logistics as a career to the next generation. During a busy week, along with visits to schools and colleges, family fun days and exhibitions at motorway service stations, the RHA hosted a reception in the Palace of Westminster attended by MPs and high ranking civil servants.
“Based on the success of last year’s event we were confident that National Lorry Week 2016 would be just as good,” says RHA Chief Executive, Richard Burnett. “The number of events around the country has increased, not only in number but also in size. Hauliers opened their premises, held events at sports stadiums and theme parks. Our ‘Next Generation’ theme is not only promoting the industry as a career, its raising awareness about road safety for pedestrians and cyclists.”
